Pet Travel Vaccinations for Asia: What Canadian Pet Owners Need to Know (Dogs & Cats)
Travelling with your pet to Asia—whether Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, or Thailand—requires advanced preparation and strict compliance with vaccination and documentation timelines. Many Asian countries have multi-step rabies vaccination, microchip, and blood test rules, and missing a step often results in long quarantines.
Rabies Vaccination Timing
Most Asian destinations require a microchip first, then a valid rabies vaccine using an inactivated or recombinant vaccine.
Countries like Japan and Singapore require two rabies vaccines administered after microchipping, spaced at least 30 days apart, and a rabies antibody titre test (RNATT).
The Rabies Antibody Titre Test
Japan, Singapore, and South Korea require a Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titre Test (RNATT) done after the second rabies vaccine.
- Must be performed at an approved laboratory
- Minimum titre threshold: ≥0.5 IU/mL
- PETS cannot enter before 180 days have passed from the date the lab accepted the sample
Other Required Vaccines
For dogs:
- DHPP
- Bordetella (varies)
- Leptospirosis (recommended for Southeast Asia)
For cats:
- FVRCP
Health Examination Requirements
Most Asian countries require a health exam within 2–10 days of travel, depending on the destination.
The CFIA must endorse the veterinary health certificate.
